Terrible blogger here writing from the shop in Madrid. We opened on Friday and I have been living in the back room since Thursday night. The next project here will be the 2 courtyards and then we will be done with the shop construction and renovation until Spring (when the rear area of the lot will have to be addressed).

As to the project that is the actual focus of this blog: the plans for the house are completed and await approval by the county. That could take months and will be a real test of my patience, but there is little we can do about that. In the meantime I have gotten re-started on the rock collection for the interior gabion walls and the walls for the courtyard.  Two hours of collecting rocks first thing in the morning is a great workout and really does provide a sense of accomplishment.

So now there’s a new rhythm to life. One that will, with any luck, move the project forward.

hi, sounds like you are doing great work. I stumbled upon your blog doing a search for sustainable building matls, specifically flooring. so, perhaps you might have some advice for me: I am interested in using reused/reclaimed wood flooring in my 1949 pueblo-style house that currently has ratty carpeting. I live in Albuquerque. Do you have any advice as to where I might start looking for this? I am on a somewhat tight budget, so ordering stuff from the northeast, for example, is not really an option. I am also open to using an old dance floor, gymnasium floor, etc., but don't really know where to start. Any advice you have is much appreciated...and good luck on your projects. thanks, Christie

Hi Christie. I am not so sure about flooring since I was decided on either pouted adobe (clay) or concrete for my project. One of the main problems with recycled wood is that it usually is rough and uneven and so makes better ceiling and wall material than floor, unless you take the time and expense to get it refinished (possibly re-planed!).

Having said this, there are a few sources for used wood in Albuquerque. One is a place along the access road of I-25 between the La Cienega exit and Santa Fe (I don't remember the name of the shop, sorry, but they have very interesting recycled wood). Also, Coronado Wrecking and Salvage is a great source in Albuquerque. Minimally they would probably help you source what you are looking for. Finally, check out the Habitat for Humanity Restore in ABQ: Most of what they have are fixtures and the like, but I suspect they also have wood.

        Good luck
